How does fiber laser cutting work?

In fiber laser cutting, a high-energy laser beam is delivered to the cutting head through an optical fibre cable and focused onto a very small spot. The focused beam melts the metal, and an assist gas (oxygen, nitrogen or air) clears the molten material from the cutting zone.

Advantages of fiber lasers

  • High precision: Thanks to the narrow kerf, complex geometries are cut with clean edges.
  • Speed: On thin and medium-thickness sheet, cutting speeds are far higher than with conventional methods.
  • Low scrap: Nesting optimisation gets the maximum yield from each sheet.
  • Tool-free production: There are no tooling costs for prototypes and small batches.

Which materials can be cut?

Carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanised sheet, aluminium, copper and brass can all be cut successfully with a fiber laser. Cutting parameters and the choice of assist gas vary according to the material.
